LEARN ABOUT COMMUNICATIVE DISORDERS ASSISTANTS

CDA

What are communicative disorders assistants?

Communicative disorders assistants (CDAs) work collaboratively with our speech-language pathologist to implement effective treatment plans to help your child meet their goals.

What is the difference between a CDA and a Speech-Language Pathologist?

CDAs and Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) both have the skills and qualifications to carry out therapy sessions based on your child’s treatment plan.  CDAs are unable to carry out assessments and set goals for treatment plans, which is why you are seen by an SLP for your initial assessment.

Is the Speech-Language Pathologist still involved in my child's treatment?

Yes, the SLP who does your assessment will have weekly meetings with the CDA to review how your child is progressing with their goals.  Every eight to ten sessions, there is a review session where the SLP, either in person or virtually, will watch your child’s session, and provide you with a progress report, including updated goals, if required.

What if I would like to have sessions with a Speech-Language Pathologist?

During your child’s initial assessment, this will be discussed, and a plan will be formulated with the SLP as to who your child will be seeing for sessions.  Our clinicians all have different additional qualifications and the suggested clinician will be whomever best fits your child’s therapy needs.
